What's the difference between fitting in and belonging?

Hi friends,
This week’s episode of The Most Important Thing tackles one of the most powerful—and complicated—human needs: belonging.
From the Wholehearted Parenting Manifesto:
“We will always have permission to be ourselves with each other no matter what. You will always belong here.”
But what does that actually look like inside a family? How can we foster a strong family identity without boxing our kids in or forcing any of us to conform rather than belong?
In Belonging, we explore:
The difference between fitting in and true belonging (with help from Brené Brown and some wise 8th graders).
What it means to foster individuation at every age.
How childhood wounds around belonging can shape us as adults and parents.
The risk of strong family culture becoming too rigid if we’re not careful.
What we might experiment with when our kids bring home “someone else’s energy.”
TMIT About Belonging
Our sense of belonging can never be greater
than our level of self‑acceptance.
You’ll always belong here,

🧡 Only 2 More WPM Episodes to go 🧡
As you all probably know by now, we've been going through Brené Brown's "The Wholehearted Parenting Manifesto" line by line each week for the last 10 weeks. With only 2 more weeks to go, here are the episodes in order, in case you missed any and want to catch up:
TMIT 20: Daring Greatly drops 07/28
TMIT 21: Seeing You drops 08/04
We view these as foundational topics within family culture and would love to hear how they’re showing up in your world, what you’ve listened to (and what you skipped!), what resonated, and what didn’t.
We’re navigating this family culture journey with TMIT as we go, and your feedback and engagement really help us calibrate.
🧡 We’d love to hear from you:
What have you tried?
What’s worked? What hasn’t?
